Swedish Black Hen aka Svart Hona
The Swedish Black Hen, or Svart Hona, has the same fibromelanistic trait as the well known chicken breed from Indonesia, the Ayam Cemani. Swedish Black Hens are even rarer than Cemani. Fewer than 500 Swedish Black Hens are known to be in existence. Feathers can shimmer with iridescent greens and purples. They are a very hardy breed and not known for suffering from frostbite. They are relatively small and sleek, the roosters weigh about 4 lbs and have a friendly, relaxed temperament. The hens lay white or cream-colored eggs. Our birds are NOT perfect but they are great looking birds and will make a great addition to your flock. The birds pictured are some of actual birds in the breeding pen and the rest of the birds in the breeding pen are of equal quality to those pictured. Please keep in mind Svart Hona is a landrace breed and while the parent stock has full pigment and no leakage, it is possible to hatch a less than perfect chick from time to time. Our breeder stock come directly from both Ewe Crazy Farms and Greenfire Farms!
There is a 8 chick minimum. You are welcome to mix and match breeds to reach the 8 chick minimum. All chicks come with an arrive alive guarantee!

Please specify a range of acceptable dates in the notes section before submitting your payment. After receiving your order, we will contact you by email with a scheduled ship date. We fill orders on a first come, first served basis, so it is important to place your paid order as soon as possible to get the best chance at earlier ship dates. Typically, an order can take anywhere from 1-5 weeks to ship. Please let us know if you are willing to accept any substitutions to have a quicker ship date. Please note that during the winter months chick orders will only ship once the weather is warm enough to safely ship them. Our number one concern is that our chicks make it to you safely so please be mindful of this when placing your order.
We do not accept returns on hatching eggs or chicks.
Hatching Eggs: We can not guarantee hatch rates due to many variables beyond our control during shipping. Rough handling, x-ray machines, fluctuating temperatures, and your experience with the actual incubation process all affect your hatch rate. By ordering hatching eggs from us, you accept this responsibility. We always try to include extra eggs to cover any that the shipper may crack while in transit. Please take a picture of any cracked eggs along with the package that the eggs came in showing any and all damage and email them to us as soon as possible. We will issue a refund on any damaged eggs that exceed the amount of extra eggs we sent you.
Chicks: We guarantee that our chicks will arrive alive. If any chicks arrive deceased then please email pictures to us ASAP. We will either replace or refund, at our discretion, any deceased chicks that exceed the value of free chicks you were sent. No refund will be given for shipping.
Vaccinations: Unless you specifically request otherwise your birds will be vaccinated for Marek’s disease. Please note that the Marek’s vaccine is not 100% effective, and even vaccinated birds may later contract Marek’s if the disease is present on your property. Marek’s is very common and often present in backyard flocks yet remains undetected because the flock is resistant to the disease. If you'd prefer that your chicks not be vaccinated then when checking out please include a note stating to not vaccinate.
No cancellations within 7 days of the scheduled shipping date for hatching eggs. Cancellations for chick orders must be made at least 21 days before your order is scheduled to ship. If you decide to cancel your order, please email us with your order number and the reason for cancellation. Sometimes it is necessary for Orchard Hill Poultry to cancel an order, and we reserve the right to do so. If we cancel your order, you will be issued a full refund.
The National Poultry Improvement Plan tests all of our birds semi-annually. Our NPIP certification number is GA 57-1426. If you would like to receive the USDA NPIP 9-3 form for your eggs, please indicate so on your order. The form will be emailed to you once your order ships.
